What is Gilsonite?

Gilsonite is used in more than 160 products,

primarily in dark-colored printing inks and paints, oil well drilling muds and cements, asphalt modifiers, foundry sands additives and a wide variety of chemical products. Gilsonite  is compatible with micro crystalline and paraffin wax. As a supplier of Gilsonite products, we market many different grades of Gilsonite for different application

Gilsonite used in a drilling mud for drilling a well wherein the gilsonite is prepared by reacting at a temperature between 210°-280°. with a mixture of water, API gilsonite having a softening point of at least 300. Our product range that invert, disperse, and hydrate faster to give targeted downhole performance when quick response is necessary. Our Gilsonite powder for water-based muds are field-proven in all drilling environments and show good compatibility with other systems. Our expertise and experience, coupled with high-quality products, enable our customers to improve cost, and reduce their environmental footprint in their drilling operations.

Gilsonite road construction polymer modified bitumen PMB asphalt

Gilsonite is best additive to add to bitumen to modify character of the bitumen. It is blending 10-30% by weight of Gilsonite and 5-25% by weight SBR with penetration grade of bitumen then in low temperature brings flexibility and high temperature increase softening point. Apart from modified bitumen it is using widely for repair and construction of asphalt as asphalt binder and repairmen since there is sulfur in and boundary of molecular is octagon strength of the final asphalt would be very high and prevent to break or bald.

Gilsonite paint and coat

Gilsonite creates hardness to the paint which will not easily remove and Gilsonite increasing the paint adhesion, gloss, resistance against chemical resistance and water resistance. Gilsonite-based paints and coat are generally used to protect metal surfaces. They are very popular as paints for automobile chassis, auto radiators, steel drums, ocean-going containers, steel structures, roof coating. More or less solvent may be used in each formula to achieve the desired viscosity and more or less Gilsonite may be used to achieve the desired hardness. The drying rate may be varied by choosing solvents with different evaporation rates.

Gilsonite is categorized as a solvable material in oil solutions such as CS2 or TCE (trichloroethylene).

A major component of gilsonite is carbon; it also contains several other elements including nitrogen and sulfur and some volatile compounds. Gilsonite is mined in underground shafts and resembles shiny black obsidian. Discovered in the 1860s, it was first marketed as a lacquer, electrical insulator, and waterproofing compound about twenty-five years later by Samuel H. Gilson.
